زمانی که خودروی اسپورت جدیدی عرضه می‌شود یکی از جذاب‌ترین مشخصات برای افراد میزان قدرت تولیدی آن خودرو است.
قدرت به عنوان یک هویت عبارت از میزان سریع بودن و توانایی یک خودرو در حرکت دادن یک خودرو به جلو مطرح است که این توانایی و اجبار به حرکت جلو به گشتاور تولیدی پیشرانه‌ی احتراق داخلی نیز بستگی دارد. این موضوع در مهندسی به‌طور عمومی میزان “کار” خودرو برای حرکت خوانده می‌شود؛ اما در نواحی مختلف جهان واحدهای یکسانی برای بیان میزان قدرت یک خودرو وجود ندارد ولی می‌توان با استفاده از فرمول‌های مختلف واحدها را به یکدیگر تبدیل کرد. بیایید با هم نگاهی به تفاوت واحدهای مختلف بیندازیم.
کیلووات Kilowatts

از نظر فنی این فرم از اندازه‌گیری یکسان‌ترین روش محاسبه و اندازه‌گیری قدرت بوده و توسط هر مهندسی در هرکجای دنیا مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد. وات یک واحد SI (سیستم بین‌المللی) بوده به این معنی که همانند متر، کیلوگرم، ژول و ثانیه بر مبنای سیستم متریک شکل گرفته است. وات میزان انرژی ترانسفر شده در واحد زمان است که در واقع همان کاری است که پیشرانه‌ای احتراق داخلی انجام می‌دهد.
این واحد اکثراً در نیم‌کره‌ی جنوبی زمین مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد و می‌تواند توسط گشتاور چرخ در حال گردش و توسط این فرمول محاسبه شود:
کیلووات بیش‌ازپیش در ذکر قدرت خروجی پیشرانه‌ها مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد و تعجبی نخواهیم کرد اگر که در اروپا نیز این واحد به عنوان استاندارد تعیین شود اگرچه که ممکن است آمریکایی‌ها فشار زیادی برای ممانعت از این کار وارد کنند.
اگرچه با عرضه‌ی روزافزون خودروهای الکتریکی استفاده از این واحد افزایش یافته اما توانایی پیشرانه‌های الکتریکی با استفاده از کیلووات ساعت kWh بیان می‌شود که در واقع بیانی از توانایی تولید بخش معینی از قدرت توسط آن پیشرانه است.
اسب بخار HP
این واحد که توسط پدر ماشین بخار آقای جیمز وات خلق شده تا به امروز هم کاربرد داشته و در اکثر نقاط دنیا از آن برای بیان قدرت خروجی پیشرانه استفاده می‌شود. اسب بخار یعنی حمل 14968 کیلوگرم جرم توسط یک اسب در یک دقیقه و به فاصله‌ی 30.5 سانتی‌متر. هیچ‌کسی نمی‌داند که آیا اسبی وجود دارد که بتواند این مقدار از بار را حمل کند یا خیر. این واحد قدرت به وات اجازه داد تا مقایسه‌ای مستقیم بین لوکوموتیو بخار خود و اسب‌های معمولی داشته باشد. تا زمانی که ماشین بخار اختراع نشده بود بخش اعظم حمل‌ونقل در سلطه‌ی اسب‌ها بود.
اسب بخار هنوز هم به عنوان واحد اصلی قدرت باقی مانده و در اکثر نقاط جهان نیز از همین واحد استفاده می‌شود. با استفاده از فرمول‌های زیر می‌توان تبدیلات مختص اسب بخار به دیگر واحد را انجام داد:
البته استفاده از اسب بخار نیز دردسرهای خاص خود را دارد. BHP (brake horsepower) به تجهیزات موردنیاز برای تست قدرت خروجی پیشرانه‌ها اشاره دارد. در ایالات‌متحده این مورد تنها با قطعات جانبی متصل به قوای محرکه اندازه‌گیری می‌شود و البته برخی موارد جانبی در نظر گرفته نمی‌شود؛ بنابراین اگر همه‌ی قطعات در جای خود باشند، اعداد اسب بخار HP آمریکایی‌ها بالاتر از BHP محاسبه شده توسط اروپایی‌ها به دست می‌آید.
WHP یا اسب بخار چرخ نیز نشان‌دهنده‌ی قدرت مفیدی است که پیشرانه تولید می‌کند و این واحد نیز با استفاده از گشتاوری که از طریق قوای محرکه به دست می‌آید محاسبه می‌شود.

این کلمه مخفف pferdestärke است که ترجمه‌ی ساده‌ی آن همان اسب بخار است اما برخی اصلاحات متریک در آن صورت گرفته تا مناسب حال قرن 21 باشد. اسب بخار متریک در اروپا به‌عنوان واحدی استاندارد برای اندازه‌گیری و بیان قدرت بکار می‌رود و احتمالاً در آینده‌ای نه‌چندان دور در انگلستان نیز به‌طور گسترده استفاده خواهد شد.
استاندارد مهندسی رسمی برای اندازه‌گیری اسب بخار متریک به میزان قدرت مورد نیاز برای بالا بردن 75 کیلوگرم جرم به اندازه‌ی یک متر و در یک ثانیه تعریف می‌شود. این واحد 1.4 درصد بیشتر از واحدهای امپریال قدیمی است.
حال که تعاریف و تفاوت‌های واحدهای مختلف قدرت را دانستیم بهتر است نگاهی به قدرت تولیدی برخی خودروهای مشهور بیندازیم:
Nissan Skyline GTR R34: 206kW = 276hp = 280PS
McLaren 570S: 419kW = 562hp = 570PS
Honda Civic Type-R FK2: 228kW = 306hp = 310PS
Bugatti Chiron: 1,103kW = 1,479hp = 1500PS
