ما هم مثل اکثر افراد اعتقاد زیادی به نقش زیاد لاستیک‌های فصلی نداشتیم و تصور می‌کردیم که این لاستیک‌ها نمی‌توانند کار سیستم چهار چرخ محرک را انجام دهند. البته هنوز هم از گوشه و کنار و می‌شنویم که فرستادن قدرت پیشرانه به چرخ‌های بیشتر شما را از لاستیک‌های فصلی بی‌نیاز می‌کند؛ اما برای فهمیدن اینکه در گذشته اشتباه می‌کردیم تنها 5 دقیقه زمان نیاز بود! با نشستن پشت فرمان خودرویی که مجهز به لاستیک‌های زمستانی بود بسیاری از ایده‌های قدیمی اشتباه از آب درآمدند؛ و بله این موضوع دربرگیرنده‌ی مالکان خودروهای شاسی‌بلند و تراک دو دیفرانسیل نیز هست. داشتن سیستم چهار چرخ محرک شما را در برق شکست‌ناپذیر نمی‌کند. این یک تصور غلط بوده و باید اصلاح شود.
قانون پایه این است که اگر دمای محل زندگی شما به زیر 7 درجه سانتی‌گراد افت کرد باید از لاستیک‌های زمستانی استفاده کرد؛ و این یک تئوری توطئه نیست. این علم است. به یاد داشته باشید، آن‌ها لاستیک‌های زمستانی هستند نه لاستیک‌های برفی. حتی اگر هیچ برفی روی زمین ننشسته باشد، مواد نرم‌تر بکار رفته در لاستیک‌های زمستانی نقطه انجماد پایین‌تری دارند و این امر به آن‌ها اجازه می‌دهد تا انعطاف‌پذیر باقی بمانند. این ترکیبات به همراه الگوهای آج مخصوص و کانال‌های آب بی‌شمار به لاستیک اجازه می‌دهد تا چسبندگی زیادی را که لاستیک‌های تمام فصل از ایجاد آن عاجزند فراهم نماید.
به یاد داشته باشید، ما اینجا از چسبندگی حرف می‌زنیم نه از کشش. این دو واژه اغلب به جای هم استفاده می‌شوند و اگرچه اساساً واژه‌هایی یکسان هستند اما تفاوت بسیاری دارد و این مورد در رانندگی زمستانی بسیار مهم است.
کشش به عنوان حد اصطکاک بین لاستیک‌ها و سطح جاده تعریف می‌شود. با رسیدن به حد نهایی چرخ شروع به هرزگردی خواهد کرد که همین امر منجر به دخالت سیستم کنترل کشش می‌شود. چسبندگی به عنوان میزان چسبیدن به سطح جاده تعریف می‌شود و حتی زمانی که نیرو به چرخ منتقل نمی‌شود امری حیاتی به شمار می‌رود. چسبندگی همچنین در بحث چگونگی توقف خود خودرو نیز مطرح است. سیستم چهار چرخ محرک باعث افزایش این موضوع نمی‌شود؛ و اینجاست که نمی‌توان سیستم چهار چرخ محرک را به لاستیک‌های زمستانی ترجیح داد.
و برای آن دسته از افرادی که نگران هزینه‌ی اضافی خرید لاستیک‌های زمستانی هستند باید گفت فراموش نکنید داشتن دو ست از لاستیک‌ها در طول سال باعث کاهش ساییدگی هر دوی آن‌ها می‌شود. اگر هنوز نتوانسته‌اید خود را برای این هزینه توجیه کنید باید گفت رسماً ایمنی خود و اطرافیان را با مشتی دلار معامله کرده‌اید!
سیستم چهار چرخ محرک در زمان عبور از راه‌های پوشیده از برف عالی است اما تصور غلط درباره‌ی برتری این سیستم در زمستان باید محو شود. اگر می‌توانید کشف کنید که سیستم چهار چرخ می‌تواند سرعت خودرو را در جاده‌های لغزنده کم کند پس می‌توانید آن را به عامه‌ی مردم بفروشید! اما اگر قادر به انجام چنین کاری نیستید پس هر چه زودتر به یک لاستیک‌فروشی مراجعه کنید. این برای شما خوب است!
