ترومای شلاقی (Whiplash Injury)، آسیب ستون فقرات گردنی است که به دنبال ضربات جلو و عقب وارد به خودرو، حتی در سرعت های پایین رخ می دهد. در این حالت به دنبال نیروی وارد شده و ترمز شدید خودرو، ابتدا سر به عقب خم می شود و سپس خودبخود سر به جلو بر می گردد. چنین خم و راست شدن ناگهانی مهره های گردن سبب درد در ناحیه گردن و فواصل بین دو کتف می شود، که منجر به محدودیت حرکت گردن می شود. حتی ممکن است به علت تورم قدام گردن اختلال بلع رخ دهد و در موارد بسیار شدید آسیب به جمجه وارد می شود.
این نوع تصادفات به میزان بالایی رخ می دهد. تشخیص ضایعات ناشی از آن هم سخت و هم هزینه بردار است. همچنین پاسخ به درمان این جراحات بسیار بد است که حتی تا دو سال فرد را درگیر می کند. و مهمتر آنکه طبق برآوردهای انجام شده سالانه تا 10 ملیارد یورو هزینه را بر جوامع کشور های اروپایی تحمیل می کند. تمام این عوامل منجر به آن شده تا در بریتانیا یک تبم تحقیقاتی که متشکل از پزشکان متخصص، فیزیوتراپیست ها و اعضاء دولت، شرکت های بیمه، قوه قضاییه و گروه های ذینفع می باشد، به بررسی این عارضه و راهکارهای پیشگیری از آن بپردازند.
به منظور ارزیابی بیشتر، علاوه بر شبیه سازی تست برخورد از جلو و عقب، شبیه سازی دیگری با نصب صندلی بر روی سورتمه محرک ( تست دینامیک) در جهت برآورد نیروهای وارده که منجر به ایجاد ضایعه می گردند، هم صورت می گیرد. بر اساس تحقیقات انجام شده طراحی مدل هندسی، حفظ یکارچگی و اندازه صندلی، نحوه قرار گیری سر و محافظت از آن بر ریسک بروز این عارضه تاثیرگذار است. به طور مثال امروزه سعی بر آن است که صندلی سرنشینان جلو به نحوی طراحی شود که محل تکیه گاه سر تا حد امکان پهن و وسیع باشد و در عین حال کمی متمایل به جلو باشد. در واقع هدف آن است که با نزدیک کردن ناحیه سر و گردن به صندلی، دامنه حرکت شلاقی در هنگام وقوع تصادف کاهش یابد.
