ولی چرا همه می‌خواهند سوختی تولید کنند که اشتعال آن در موتور سخت‌تر باشد؟ برای فهمیدن نقش عدد اکتان و فشار احتراق در موتور، آشنایی با اصطلاحی به نام “knock” ضروری به نظر می‌رسد. وقتی که بنزین از طریق انژکتور به داخل سیلندر اسپری می‌شود و با اکسیژن ترکیب می‌شود، طراحان موتور انتظار دارند این سوخت به حالت گاز در آنجا بماند تا زمانی که شمع‌ها روشن شوند و باعث انفجار برای حرکت به سمت پایین پیستون برای ایجاد نیرو شوند. مدت زمان این انفجار بسیار حیاتی است، بنزینی که خیلی سریع مشتعل شود باعث ایجاد knock (ضربه) می‌شود که این عمل خروجی و کارایی موتور را کاهش می‌دهد و حتی در شرایط بد می‌تواند به موتور آسیب فیزیکی برساند.
در اکثر موتورها، به ندرت شاهد این نوع ضربه هستیم و این به این دلیل است که میزان تراکم (فشاری که مخلوط سوخت و هوا به سیلندر وارد می‌کند) به اندازه کافی پایین است و عدد اکتان بنزین‌های معمولی کافی و مطلوب است. قاطعانه می‌توان گفت هیچ سودی از استفاده از بنزین‌های سطح بالا در موتورهای استاندارد و خوب نصیب شما نخواهد شد، زیرا این موتورها قادر نیستند از این خاصیت ضربهٔ کمتر سود ببرند، اگرچه طرح‌های مدیریت موتور پیشرفته‌تر به ویژه مدل‌های به کار رفته در وسایل مجهز به تکنولوژی توربو شارژ و سوپر شارژ می‌توانند تراکم را تا حد بالایی انجام دهند، بنابراین به بنزین‌های با اکتان بالاتر برای جلوگیری از ایجاد ضربه نیازمندند.
